Maths
Mathematics makes several important contributions to a sound general education in years 8 – 10. It provides students with a range of skills and areas of understanding that are: Year 8 is a foundation year. Each unit will contain Core and Extension outcomes to cater for the range of student abilities. Year 9 offers the more mathematically able students the opportunity to focus on the extension outcomes. Students will have their performance reviewed at the end of each unit to decide the subsequent unit to be studied. M27 and M28 are Stage 3 units and can contribute to Year 10 exit level determinations. Year 10 again offers students the opportunity to choose a level of mathematics best suited to their ability and probable senior choices. It is highly recommended that students who wish to pursue Mathematics B and Mathematics C study M41, M42, M43 and M44. Students who have not achieved a Sound Achievement by the completion of M33 must study M34. M35 and M44 offer students at Sound or above the opportunity to improve their exit level. To gain a High or Very High Achievement, students must achieve extension outcomes. Maths for Life/Maths EssentialsStudents who are encountering difficulties in Maths may be offered access to these courses on the recommendation of the Maths Head of Department. Maths for LifeStudents will focus on functional numeracy and its practical applications to equip them with necessary mathematical life skills. Maths EssentialsStudents will focus on practical mathematical applications to allow them to achieve some success in areas such as measurement, money, geometry, algebra and statistics.
