Manual Arts

COURSE OVERVIEW

Manual Arts opens up a range of options for students from apprenticeships through drafting to engineering or for developing important life skills to be used around the family home or car. Learning experiences in Manual Arts gives students the opportunity to learn about materials and design and to develop their skills and knowledge through the use of technology.

Manual Arts consists of two areas of study:

  • Workshop - Students can gain major studies in Shop A (wood), Shop B (metal) or Manual Arts (a selection from both Shop A or B Units where 13 units are available).
  • Graphics - Students can choose up to 5 Units of study with a computer or manual drafting bias.

Students may choose more than six units, including Year 8, to broaden their knowledge or prepare for study in the Senior School. Of course, if students choose to do less than five units, they will not qualify for a Major study, but these will appear on their Junior Certificate.

    LINKS TO THE SENIOR CURRICULUM
Certificate I in Engineering has been developed to provide young people with the opportunity to undertake a broad-based, widely recognised vocational education course as an integral part of their senior course of study. It is based on the National Metal and Engineering Curriculum and covers study areas such as welding, machining and fabrication techniques. When selecting students for this course, preference will be given to students who have majored in Shop B or Manual Arts with a metal bias.

Certificate I in Furnishings has been developed to provide young people with the opportunity to undertake a broad-based, widely recognised vocational education course as an integral part of their senior course of study. It is based on the National Furnishings Industry Competence Standards and covers study areas such as hand and power tools, materials and basic construction. When selecting students for this course, preference will be given to students who have majored in Shop A or Manual Arts with a wood bias.

Graphics is a Queensland Studies Authority subject offered in Year 11 &12. The subject expands on the student’s existing knowledge and skills using sketching techniques as well as Computer Aided Drawing (CAD). When selecting students for this course, preference will be given to students who have completed a major study in Graphics.

Students will be required to supply their own safety glasses for all units in the workshop-based units of this course. Students without safety glasses will not be admitted to the workshop.
