  • English Subject Pathways (8 - 10)

English is a mandatory part of the junior curriculum covering a wide variety of communication genres with which students are expected to become conversant. The main strands of reading, writing and viewing are the major focus of the program and these are generally organised into Literature, Media, Drama, Transactional as well as Procedural styles of genre.

Effective communication skills are amongst the most important skills a student needs to develop, and therefore it has remained a mandatory subject throughout the curriculum. Traditional studies of literature such as novels are a vital component. Studies of the wide range of media encountered in English are covered at each year level in the junior school. Drama is incorporated in the comedy unit in Year Eight, encountered again in Year Nine and Ten. Transactional or Procedural genres represent the more functional styles of English used in everyday life.

Students achieving a sound or better will proceed to Senior Board English in Year 11 and 12. If Junior English is difficult, your student has the option of proceeding to English Communication.
